Hot, Hot, Hot

I love summer. I love my deck surrounded by redwood and pine trees. We also have some smallish maples which you will hear much more about in the autumn. I eat breakfast while reading a good book and listening to Pandora radio on my deck. Do you know about Pandora radio? If you have a Kindle, Pandora is a free music site. You type in a genre or artist, and you create your own radio station that plays music of that style. If you dislike a song you can stop it. There is a small advertisement every six songs or so. I listen to Frank Sinatra, or Celtic music, or nature songs. I also have an Adele channel for when I'm cleaning house. While I'm reading and listening, I also watch the blue jays flitting around from tree to tree. Sometimes it's difficult to concentrate on my book when those birds are screaming at each other.

I don't think I'll be eating outside for a while. We are at the start of a heat wave, and I don't do heat. I would rather shovel snow than be outside in the heat. The older I get, the more I hate it. I will be in the house reading my book. I have piles of books all over my house. Two full bookcases, and a stack of books next to my bed, and two stacks of books in my sewing room. I have always loved to read. My Dad used to hold me on his lap and read to me. From the first time my Mother took me to a library I was hooked. I remember the children's section was down the stairs, in the basement. I was so enthralled. I would read on my bed, and reading was always my best subject when I was a child. I used to go to our neighbors house. I wish I could remember her name, but I can't. She used to give me lemonade and cookies, and she read Pinocchio to me. I guess I asked every one to read to me, before I learned how to read myself. In fact I remember the first day of school when the "Dick And Jane" book was taught. I can remember every tiny thing. The giant book. The anticipation of turning the pages. Learning how to read for myself!

That library visit was the start of a life long love, and I'll be spending this week of nasty weather in a chair, in the house with a big glass of lemonade and a book. I might be stitching a bit too... It's so hard when you have multiple obsessions!

Still Waiting

It's a very misty, rainy day today, so my photos are not their best. The true color of this teeny sweater is a very warm pea green, so you will have to use your imagination.

We are still waiting for our latest grandchild... BUT, I finished my secret project. It looks a bit crumpled, because I didn't block it. It just seems a bit silly to block a baby sweater. It's machine washable, and hopefully will be used frequently. Our little boy is taking his time. I thought for sure he would make his appearance this past weekend during our "Strawberry" moon, but nope. Mom has about had it, but he will come when he's ready. I'm excited. There haven't been any new babies in our family for five years, so this will be very fun for this Nana...

Bird Song Quilt

I'm up before the sun this morning. I'm up early every morning, and I love it. The birds are chirping and twittering their welcome to the sun. Sometimes if I'm lucky I can see a rabbit in the meadow behind our house. At least those bunnies haven't found my vegetable garden yet. I welcome the day with a cup of tea and hugs from my dogs. I try to get all of my housework done early, so that I can spend the rest of my day stitching on my applique blocks. I've finished three more blocks for Birdsong to show you today. So bright and cheery! I've had a busy week, and I'm not going to be home at all tomorrow, so I better make the best of my time today. Have a great day!

Sugar Kisses Quilt

Good morning ! It's a perfect summer day. It was cool this morning when I went for my daily walk with two of my Golden Retrievers. It was Audrey's turn, and Montana's turn. It was chilly enough that I had to wear a light sweat shirt. I think it will be warm this afternoon, but not so hot that we need the air conditioner. Perfect!

I have been working on some applique, as well as my secret knitting project. This is one of the finished squares for "Sugar Kisses". A jar of candy! Candy hearts made with a lot of polk-a-dot fabric. One of my current obsessions. I just love polk-a-dots. I've been adding quite a bit to the fabric stash. Our local fabric shop had a sale recently so I took advantage. If you know what I mean... I just noticed that you can see my bathroom tile through the fabric, so just ignore that slight honeycomb shape.

We are still waiting for our latest grandchild... any minute. I think I'll get back to my projects while I'm waiting. Have a wonderful summer day!

Garden Update

Good morning everyone! Happy Fathers Day!

I thought I'd show you what's happening in the garden around here. We have things in bloom, and other things which are getting ready to bloom. The bleeding hearts are almost done, but I did manage to capture a photo before they are done for another year. Aren't they perfect little pink bundles? I have marigolds planted in my vegetable beds. I read somewhere that they keep pests away, so I always plant them along with my tomatoes. I don't know if that is an old wives tale, or if it's true, but I do it every year. We have daylilies that are in bloom, and more that are waiting in the wings. We add to the collection every year. We have them in every color.  My vegetable garden is growing. I have a few blossoms on things, but it will be awhile before I'm harvesting anything. We can't plant our garden until late spring, because of our elevation. I cheated this year and bought large tomato plants that already had blooms. We'll see what happens...

I'll have a knitting or applique update soon... I'm off to make breakfast for the father in residence.

I'm Back

I've been home for a few days from my adventures with the Grands. We had just about as much fun as four children and their Nana can have. We must have had fun, because I came home exhausted. Of course, I hit the ground running when I got home, and I haven't stopped yet. I've been grooming my dogs, cleaning my house, taking care of my vegetable garden, running those never ending errands, and knitting that secret baby project. Crazy busy I tell you. My life always seems crazy busy! Hopefully my secret project will be finished later today. I'm trying to hurry, as our newest grand is due any second now. If the baby's Mom could have a say in the matter, then today would be a great day for a birthday!

I'll keep you posted!

My Vacation

I made a summer banner and hung it on my mantle. I have my parents wedding photo, and a photo of my grandmother and one of her best friends, Edna, displayed on it. I just love the photo of my  Grandmother, Mam, and her friend. I posted it here so you could see it. Aren't they cute? With their handbags and their suits? They were probably going shopping. The other photo on the mantle is my parents on their wedding day. I miss them always, and just love looking at this photo of them when they were young and so darn happy!  My living room is sort of dark, but I try to brighten it up a bit with a cute quilt and my banner.  The photo album above is full of my wedding photos. I keep it out in the summer, so I can grab it if we have to leave quickly. I live in the mountains, and fire is always a worry in the summer. I don't even want to think about it...

I'm leaving for a bit. I will be with some of my grandchildren for a few days, and we have big plans. Well, I should say I have big plans. We are going to see a movie, going to the zoo, having upside down day, having a movie fest (with junk food), playing Twister, having root beer floats and going to McDonalds. We are going to stay up late, and eat everything bad for us, and when we go to McDonalds we will be having fries and soda!  I hope I survive... Anyway, I won't be posting on this here ole blog, because I'll be playing with my favorite people. Their parents will be in Disneyland celebrating their anniversary. We will be thinking of them while they party with Mickey...

I started a new knitting project for a new grandchild, and tried to start "duck" feet for the same almost here little one. No such luck on the "duck" feet . I could not knit that pattern for love or money. I need a lesson and when I get home, I'll be going for help.  They are very cute though!  If and when I figure the pattern out, I will show you.

Have a great few days, and think of me... Help!

Tea For Me

I started my busy "Bee" day with tea and a vanilla scone. Just a sweet treat to start my favorite day of the week. Favorite, because I get to spend the afternoon with my quilting friends at "Bee"! What's not to like? I get to spend the afternoon sewing with my friends, catch up on all the news, and have dessert. So, I thought I'd have dessert for breakfast. We are at the beginning of a nasty heat wave, so I'm not sure how much baking will be done for the next few days. I have a brown paper bag of apricots waiting in the refrigerator though, so I see a pie baking morning in my future. I hope it turns out as well as the cherry pie I baked last week! I hope you have a great afternoon!

Chocolate Basket Quilt

Good beautiful warm sunny morning everyone! Summer has made an appearance. In fact we turned the air conditioner on yesterday for the first of many times. My sewing room is on the bottom floor of our house, and I freeze when the air conditioner is on, so you will find me wearing a sweater on steamy hot summer afternoons. I will be stitching away happily on my two new projects.

I wanted to show you a photo of my quilt hanging in my bedroom. I'm not sure about the blue fabric I used on the vases in the middle row. I should have used something different. I really wanted a chocolate background, and I think the blue I selected is just lost. What do you think? I'm in love with that milk chocolate fabric. I am very happy with the fabric for the dots too. It really needed that sparkle from a little white.

Well, I'm off to walk s few Golden Retrievers, water my vegetable garden and read my GREAT book. I'm reading The Postmistress by Sarah Blake.

To Market, To Market

Every Saturday morning from mid-May to mid-October is the farmers market in Sonora. I try to make it every week, and this year I'm going to. Except when I have something else that I have to do. You know, if I have to go to Disneyland or something. Or if someone else needs a babysitter so that he can go to Disneyland. Now who needs a babysitter so that they can go without their children to Disneyland? Hmmm....

Anyway. Back on track. Today I went to the market. I brought home sunny eggs, cherries, strawberries, juicy to die for peaches, blueberries and enough apricots for a pie. Yesterday I made a cherry pie. A ruby red pie with shortbread crust. Don't you want to go bake one? Give it a try. If I can do it, anyone can.

Back to my vegetable garden. I'm almost done. Oh, and I promised my hubby vanilla scones, so I better run. Have a great Saturday!
